10 Asia reporters pick SKKS as 2010′s best drama

[Paraphrase]
Fourteen reporters from 10Asia gathered together to vote for what they believed were the best drama, director, writer, and actor in the drama world in 2010. <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> was selected as the year’s best drama with 6 votes, just edging out <Chuno>with 5. As the article mentions, the reporters who submitted their votes are simply writers who diligently and lovingly watched Korea’s dramas over the past year, so their votes are more reflective of personal taste than professional critical opinion. Though they did not win, two reporters also selected Kim Kap Soo [the actor who played Lee Sunjoon's father] as the best actor, and one reporter selected the Jalgeum Four of Park Yoochun, Park Minyoung, Yoo Ah In, and Song Joong Ki as the best actors of the dramas of 2010. =)

This year’s drama: KBS <Sungkyunkwan Scandal>

[Translation]
Though KBS’s <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> was “not this year’s most well-made drama, it was the most meaningful” (Yoon Hee Sung). “It didn’t go down the path of naive hypocrisy or malpheumisms packaged in coolness, and in this generation in which it is hard to speak of dreams, it was a drama that showed rare balance and frankness and tossed out the most basic questions necessary for dreams” (Baek Eun Ha). “Besides the outside shell of the romance and coming-of-age stories, it managed to confront and question again and again issues of principles, problems of the time, reform, and intelligence. It was ‘this year’s discovery’ that nobody saw coming” (Cho Ji Young). Indeed, not only the Sungkyunkwan scholars but also viewers and critics fell completely in love with Kim Yoonshik—no, Kim Yoonhee. Of course, one cannot ignore the drama’s weaknesses, including that “the second half deteriorated and the story wasn’t unified from time to time” [...] “But the energy from that [lack of unification] allowed the drama to be a youth, sageuk, and political drama [all at once]” (Kang Myung Seok), turning this opinion into a positive one. More than anything else, this drama asked serious questions about the way we should live our lives, and did so with the voices of young people speaking toward a young generation, and made an effort to awaken our exhausted and emasculated age to the world. Thus our most honest feelings about <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> can be summed up in the words of Yoon Hee Sung: “It wasn’t a drama that made its viewers laugh or cry, but there was no other drama that warmed our hearts like this.”

What projects will the four stars of ‘SKKS’ take on next?

■ Internet message board users have been showing a high interest in what projects the SKKS actors will take on next, asking questions like “What do you think of having the Jalgeum Four in a medical drama next?” “I hope they’re in a modern drama next!” and “As a fan, I want to see the ‘SKKS’ actors in a new project soon.”

■ Park Minyoung is the first to have decided upon her next project. She will be in a movie for the first time since her debut, playing a young woman in her 20s who works at a pet salon shop in a horror movie called (director: Byeon Seung Ok). She ends up living with what she believes is a cat, but inexplicable and scary things start happening. She learns that the beautiful cat’s owners have all died under unexplained circumstances and becomes wrapped up in the horror surrounding the cat. Park Minyoung’s co-star will be Kim Dong Wook from the drama ‘Coffee Prince No. 1′ and filming is expected to begin soon.

■ YOO AH IN has emerged as the front-runner for the main character of the movie ‘Wandeukee’ and is in last-stage negotiations for his casting. The movie is based on the bestselling novel ‘Wandeukee’ about a poor boy who is a bad student and rebellious, and fiercely refuses to lose to anyone in a fight. The movie shows 17-year-old Wandeuk growing up and finding dreams and hope as he meets his eccentric homeroom teacher ‘Dongjoo’ who starts off as Wandeuk’s sworn enemy before gradually becoming a loving presence in his life, and also learns to kickbox. Yoo Ah In has emerged as the front-runner for the role of Wandeuk, and Kim Yoon Seok has been cast as Dongjoo, the teacher who acts like all he lives for is the fun of bothering Wandeuk, but who actually cares deeply for him.

■ Park Yoochun will likely continue to concentrate on activities as a singer as a member of JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu). JYJ had their first full concert in Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium titled ‘JYJ Worldwide Concert.’ They are planning to devote themselves to a world tour afterward.

■ Song Joong Ki, who is being deluged with drama and movie love calls, is slowly choosing his next project. For now, he is very busy appearing at end-of-year awards ceremonies and filming delayed advertisement CFs. One entertainment industry representative said, “Song Joong Ki’s popularity continues to soar, so he doesn’t have to choose his next project too quickly. His company will also take its time in choosing a good project with a good guarantee [of money for SJK] and proceed in a deliberate fashion.”

Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki at JYJ concert 11/27

At the first worldwide concert of Dong Bang trio JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu), the casts of KBS 2TV drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ were spotted attending the venue.

The ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ casts namely Song Jong Ki and Yu Ah in attended ‘JYJ Worldwide Concert in Seoul’ which started on November 27th at 8 pm. The two people were the members of ‘Jalgeum Trio’ in the drama along with Park Yoochun and their attendance indeed showed a strong friendship among these three actors. The only main characters in ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ who didn’t attend is Park Min Young who happened to have a shooting schedule at the same day.

Representatives of the two actors said, “Despite the freezing cold weather, they made their way to the venue to watch the concert. Eventhough the drama had been completed, they still sincerely stay in contact with each other.”

Today is the first concert of JYJ conducted in South Korea. Fans from China and all over Asia were seen gathering at the concert venue to watch the performance.

World famous concert director/choreographer Jeri Slaughter who is in charge to manage the Seoul concert has planned to build a roof screen with original dome structure on the concert venue for the first time, however due to hail fall since yesterday morning, the ‘concert’s roof’ was failed to complete as in the prior plan.

Meanwhile before starting the concert, JYJ sent their message of condolences on stage to all Yeonpyeongdo island victims.

JYJ interview with V magazine New York

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Not to be dramatic here, but mega-Kpop-group JYJ’s first U.S. showcase in NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday night was probably one of the craziest things I have ever seen. The concert was slated to start at 8pm, but when I arrived at the New Yorker Hotel at 1pm for my interview with the artists, I was greeted with the sight of approximately four thousand fans jam-packed into lines that stretched for over two blocks at 35th and Eighth. Passing cars slowed to see what the fuss was about, as anxious police and security guards were having a field day trying to shepherd amazed passers-by out of the way. JYJ, a three-member male group from South Korea, are mega stars internationally (as evidenced by the Guiness Book of Records entries in 2008 and 2009 for World’s Largest Official Fan Club), but this month marks their first debut in the United States. Released in Asia last month, their first English language album The Beginning is planned to drop on Amazon and iTunes in the U.S. in the next few weeks. It is a major debut, with Kanye West and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins producing separate tracks on the album, which also features Malif “The Poet Yusef”, and is distributed globally by Warner Music.
For Friday’s concert, fans began lining up on Thursday night and spent the night on the street, spurred by the first-come first-serve seating. But what truly floored me was the sheer scale of the international audience; I talked to fans who had literally just flown in from France, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Japan, Thailand, Dubai, and China for this particular show.
“Yeah, I flew to Hong Kong to see their concert two weeks ago and flew back to New York for this one,” said Shelly Jameson, 28, who is a stylist based in NYC. Whitney, 20, and Bonietta, 22 took the bus up from Michigan the night before. “We started hearing their music online and became huge fans even though we didn’t understand what they were singing about. That’s why we’re so glad this album is in English.” Pierre-Aime from France also said that he had become a fan after he heard their music online, while Alison Slater, a 34-year old artist from Toronto said that she was also flying out for the Las Vegas and LA shows that are scheduled for the 14th and 19th, respectively.

The concert kicked off with hilarious commentary by the two MC’s for the night; Julie Chang of Fox News and the actor Shane Yoon teased the crowd to a frenzied pitch before introducing JunSu, JaeJoong, and YuChun, who emerged in sleek yet showy black outfits a la Rick Owens meets Resurrection, and immediately launched into a blockbuster performance of the first song of their set. The trio showed effortless dance skills and truly impressive vocal range as they sang “Empty,” a darkly catchy song with a Euro-pop techno vibe, which was written by superstar producer Rodney Jerkins and carried the signature Darkchild electronic dance beats.
The set alternated between performances, onscreen animation, and Q&A sessions with the MCs. JYJ showed off some more sexy moves while performing “Ayyy Girl,” the collaboration track with Kanye West and Malik Yusef, which featured syncopated acoustic layers and a jagged retro beat. The show closed with the band performing a remix of the opening song “Empty” (and nearly causing an earthquake when the members urged the screaming crowd to jump) while a white blaze of confetti blasted from canons onstage.
The agitated energy level of the audience beat Madison Square Garden hollow; I personally witnessed more than one hapless audience member being carried out for suffering a seizure during the show.
In an interview before the showcase, the three JYJ members talked to V about their U.S. debut.
FC: How has your experience in New York been so far?
JunSu: We’ve been to the States about seven or eight times, but we only visited the West Coast, and so this is our first time in New York. We had really high expectations, and it’s as beautiful as we expected. It’s amazing to think that we’re actually performing in the city that we’ve seen in only movies and magazines until now.
FC: Have you found time to go out and enjoy the city?
YuChun: We went to a party on our first night.
JunSu: But then we got sick.
YuChun: The party was probably why we got sick. *laughter*
FC: What was it like working with Kanye?
JunSu: It was a blast hanging out with him at his studio in LA. We all talked a lot and were just chilling, which then led naturally to the recording sessions. Working with him was great because it was so laid-back.
YuChun: We all went out to eat burgers and thought it was funny that he didn’t take his sunglasses off the entire time. *laughter*
FC: Who are some American artists who you would like to collaborate with in the future?
JaeJoong: For me, J. Holiday. His music is very inspiring, and similar to the kind of sound that I aspire to in my own songwriting.
JunSu: I would love to work with Beyonce. We went to see her show when she came to Seoul, and it was amazing.
FC: Although you guys are famous overseas, you are debuting as a new artist in the U.S. How are you approaching your new audience?
JunSu: As musicians from Asia, we know that we have a steep hill to climb in the American music scene, but we realized that coming in. We will continue making the music that we are passionate about and we hope that the American audiences will come to appreciate our particular sound and production.

Kim Tae Hee Screenwriter - "I Didn't Know Who Yoochun Was Before, But Now I'm His Fan"

'SungKyunKwan Scandal' Screenwriter: "I had no idea who Park Yoochun was, but his acting turned out to be excellent! I'm now his fan."

Screenwriter for KBS2 drama 'SungKyunKwan Scandal' Kim Tae Hee (37) said, mentioning Park Yoochun who acts as Lee Seon Joon in the drama. Her cellphone ringtone right now is TVXQ's 'Mirotic'.

Currently a member of JYJ, Park Yoochun or 'Micky Yoochun', which is more famous than his original name, has smitten a lot of people in becoming his fans, just like Kim Tae Hee, through his acting in 'SungKyunKwan Scandal'.

Park Yoochun entered into the acting realm and received high praise beyond expectations, adding a large number of fans besides those from his singing. More importantly, with the influx of women aged 30-40 into the supportive fandom, he has surpassed the world of idols and secured his foundations as a real actor.

In the interview on the 30th, Kim Tae Hee said, "honestly, I originally wasn't really satisfied with the choice of actors, but I didn't say anything. But because I have a personality that shows on my face how I feel on the inside, it got to the point where Yoochun and I were rehearsing the lines, and he would ask me 'Teacher, why do you dislike me?' But I really like him now, and I feel so proud of him!"

She also said, "of course, he isn't completely perfect with the pronunciation and enunciation of words, he has an innate sense of emotions, perfectly interpreting Lee Seon Joon to be an elegant person. Also, he has a unique sense of humor, which really surprises me. His humor shines through sometimes, which turns Lee Seon Joon into a 'really cute and interesting fellow', instead of a 'rigid and annoying fellow'. Also, there are times when he has a side that stimulates my maternal feelings."

"What really makes me like him is his constant improvement in acting. I do hope he will continue acting, and I think he realizes this himself. He is a very wise person."

"Yoochun knows why he needs to act in a historical drama. If a singer comes out and acts in a modern drama, there won't be that much of a difference with his usual singer activities. Only when one acts in a historical drama will the feeling and image be different, separating Micky Yoochun from his acting identity. Later on I found out that he was clear of this, which was the reason why he chose this drama."

Park Yoochun and Park Min Young deny relationship claims

Actress Park Min Young and DBSK’s Park Yoochun have recently been swimming in countless rumors about the two being in a real life relationship.

The two actors are starring as the main cast for the KBS drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal‘, and many viewers are speculating whether the two are actually dating because of the perfect harmonization in their acting for the drama.

However, it has been confirmed that these relationship rumors are simply groundless and untrue.

Park Min Young’s entertainment company recently confirmed, “They are most definitely not in a relationship.”

They continued, “When people go into acting, it’s natural for them to have interest in one another. However, they are not a couple, and they do not have feelings for each other.”

Park Yoochun’s agency also emphasized, “It’s pure nonsense. They have never dated and are not dating. Park Yoochun was shocked when he heard the news.
