10 Asia reporters pick SKKS as 2010′s best drama

[Paraphrase]
Fourteen reporters from 10Asia gathered together to vote for what they believed were the best drama, director, writer, and actor in the drama world in 2010. <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> was selected as the year’s best drama with 6 votes, just edging out <Chuno>with 5. As the article mentions, the reporters who submitted their votes are simply writers who diligently and lovingly watched Korea’s dramas over the past year, so their votes are more reflective of personal taste than professional critical opinion. Though they did not win, two reporters also selected Kim Kap Soo [the actor who played Lee Sunjoon's father] as the best actor, and one reporter selected the Jalgeum Four of Park Yoochun, Park Minyoung, Yoo Ah In, and Song Joong Ki as the best actors of the dramas of 2010. =)

This year’s drama: KBS <Sungkyunkwan Scandal>

[Translation]
Though KBS’s <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> was “not this year’s most well-made drama, it was the most meaningful” (Yoon Hee Sung). “It didn’t go down the path of naive hypocrisy or malpheumisms packaged in coolness, and in this generation in which it is hard to speak of dreams, it was a drama that showed rare balance and frankness and tossed out the most basic questions necessary for dreams” (Baek Eun Ha). “Besides the outside shell of the romance and coming-of-age stories, it managed to confront and question again and again issues of principles, problems of the time, reform, and intelligence. It was ‘this year’s discovery’ that nobody saw coming” (Cho Ji Young). Indeed, not only the Sungkyunkwan scholars but also viewers and critics fell completely in love with Kim Yoonshik—no, Kim Yoonhee. Of course, one cannot ignore the drama’s weaknesses, including that “the second half deteriorated and the story wasn’t unified from time to time” [...] “But the energy from that [lack of unification] allowed the drama to be a youth, sageuk, and political drama [all at once]” (Kang Myung Seok), turning this opinion into a positive one. More than anything else, this drama asked serious questions about the way we should live our lives, and did so with the voices of young people speaking toward a young generation, and made an effort to awaken our exhausted and emasculated age to the world. Thus our most honest feelings about <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> can be summed up in the words of Yoon Hee Sung: “It wasn’t a drama that made its viewers laugh or cry, but there was no other drama that warmed our hearts like this.”

Song Joong Ki's Book on Male Grooming to be Released in Taiwan

Taiwanese men who are wondering how to make themselves look more handsome can now relax!  Song Joong Ki's book on male facial grooming, which was published in Korea last April, will also be available in Taiwan.

Song's entertainment agency, Sidus HQ, announced today that publisher Antenna Book will release "Beauty Guy Project" in Taiwan.  Kwon Youmi, the editor of Antenna Book, explained that she had received inquiries about the book from China, Hong Kong, and Japan, following Song's rising popularity from starring in "Sungkyunkwan Scandal".  The book is selling steadily in Korea.

"Nowadays, there is a growing number of men who are showing a great interest in their skin. Song's book is popular among the male readers as a guidebook for better skin," said Kwon.

No doubt that Song's baby-smooth skin and perfect facial features serve as the best advertisement for his book!

What projects will the four stars of ‘SKKS’ take on next?

■ Internet message board users have been showing a high interest in what projects the SKKS actors will take on next, asking questions like “What do you think of having the Jalgeum Four in a medical drama next?” “I hope they’re in a modern drama next!” and “As a fan, I want to see the ‘SKKS’ actors in a new project soon.”

■ Park Minyoung is the first to have decided upon her next project. She will be in a movie for the first time since her debut, playing a young woman in her 20s who works at a pet salon shop in a horror movie called (director: Byeon Seung Ok). She ends up living with what she believes is a cat, but inexplicable and scary things start happening. She learns that the beautiful cat’s owners have all died under unexplained circumstances and becomes wrapped up in the horror surrounding the cat. Park Minyoung’s co-star will be Kim Dong Wook from the drama ‘Coffee Prince No. 1′ and filming is expected to begin soon.

■ YOO AH IN has emerged as the front-runner for the main character of the movie ‘Wandeukee’ and is in last-stage negotiations for his casting. The movie is based on the bestselling novel ‘Wandeukee’ about a poor boy who is a bad student and rebellious, and fiercely refuses to lose to anyone in a fight. The movie shows 17-year-old Wandeuk growing up and finding dreams and hope as he meets his eccentric homeroom teacher ‘Dongjoo’ who starts off as Wandeuk’s sworn enemy before gradually becoming a loving presence in his life, and also learns to kickbox. Yoo Ah In has emerged as the front-runner for the role of Wandeuk, and Kim Yoon Seok has been cast as Dongjoo, the teacher who acts like all he lives for is the fun of bothering Wandeuk, but who actually cares deeply for him.

■ Park Yoochun will likely continue to concentrate on activities as a singer as a member of JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu). JYJ had their first full concert in Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium titled ‘JYJ Worldwide Concert.’ They are planning to devote themselves to a world tour afterward.

■ Song Joong Ki, who is being deluged with drama and movie love calls, is slowly choosing his next project. For now, he is very busy appearing at end-of-year awards ceremonies and filming delayed advertisement CFs. One entertainment industry representative said, “Song Joong Ki’s popularity continues to soar, so he doesn’t have to choose his next project too quickly. His company will also take its time in choosing a good project with a good guarantee [of money for SJK] and proceed in a deliberate fashion.”

[High Cut] Song Joong Ki’s first impressions of Yoo Ah In?

What were your first impressions of <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> co-stars Yoo Ah In and Micky Yoochun? Was there any competition amongst the 3 kkot-mi-nams [literally, flower-pretty-boys]?

I had thought Yoochun would be ‘weak and soft, a bit prickly,’ but when I met him he was actually incredibly manly and sentimental. And from the moment I met Ah In, his eyes weren’t ordinary. Enough that his gaze made me a little nervous [T/N: This is meant as a compliment]. As to competition, hmm…if we’re talking about looks, height more than face! Because all three of us are slender, I began wanting to look a bit bigger [by being taller].

Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki at JYJ concert 11/27

At the first worldwide concert of Dong Bang trio JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu), the casts of KBS 2TV drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ were spotted attending the venue.

The ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ casts namely Song Jong Ki and Yu Ah in attended ‘JYJ Worldwide Concert in Seoul’ which started on November 27th at 8 pm. The two people were the members of ‘Jalgeum Trio’ in the drama along with Park Yoochun and their attendance indeed showed a strong friendship among these three actors. The only main characters in ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ who didn’t attend is Park Min Young who happened to have a shooting schedule at the same day.

Representatives of the two actors said, “Despite the freezing cold weather, they made their way to the venue to watch the concert. Eventhough the drama had been completed, they still sincerely stay in contact with each other.”

Today is the first concert of JYJ conducted in South Korea. Fans from China and all over Asia were seen gathering at the concert venue to watch the performance.

World famous concert director/choreographer Jeri Slaughter who is in charge to manage the Seoul concert has planned to build a roof screen with original dome structure on the concert venue for the first time, however due to hail fall since yesterday morning, the ‘concert’s roof’ was failed to complete as in the prior plan.

Meanwhile before starting the concert, JYJ sent their message of condolences on stage to all Yeonpyeongdo island victims.

Photo Recap of the 2010 Style Icon Awards

Coming to you a few days late (we apologize) is our photo recap of the 2010 Style Icon Awards, which were held at the CJ E&M Center in Seoul on November 17.  Along with the pictures, two of us have posted a bit of commentary (which reflect the opinions of no one but melkimx and green-rose).  Let's get started!

2NE1 appeared with Jeremy Scott.  Scott is an American fashion designer whose clothes have been worn by the likes of Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears -- way too many names to count, most of them in the music scene.

Look, he has teddy bears on his sneakers!

Jeremy Scott is close friends with CL and has appeared with her and 2NE1 on several occasions.  We can see why they get along; they both know how to pose on the red carpet like no one's business!  We love the clothes hanger... it shows that CL's dress is two-ended.  When she's tired of wearing this one, she can wear the other end and put this one on the clothes hanger instead.

Some people have said that this dress doesn't flatter Minzy very much, but we think she looks really good in it.  Love the haircolor but maybe not the style.

Dara and Bom look very eighties rock music video!

Min Hyo Rin also looks very eighties, but she went the prom dress route instead.  Hm.

We bet a lot of girls are envisioning that So Ji Sub is delivering the flowers to them.

He does the "smoldering look" very well.

Netizens criticized Kim Jung Eun for showing up on the red carpet with loose threads at the hem, but when we look at this fringed brocade minidress, we feel like that should be the least of their concerns.  But she's the one who won the Style Icon award, not me, so what do I know?

Lee Min Jung looks amazing.

Flawless, right down to the nail polish!

Song Joong Ki makes me sad, and not just because he has a pretty girl, which by the way is Seo In Young, former member of the Kpop Group Jewelry, on his arm.  He makes me sad because he chose to pair his devastatingly handsome face with a horrible blazer and a dull outfit.

CN Blue looks so happy to be here.

Kim Hyun Joong plays it safe -- and handsome -- with a tux.  This is the second fashion award he's picked up in two weeks.

Lee Byung Hun... what can we say?  That smile!

Oh Ji Eun manages to pull off the animal print!  Just goes to show she belongs at these awards!

Oh Yeon Soo shows everyone why she won the Fashionista award.  She looks so elegant!

Chun Jung Myung won the Male Talent Style Icon award, despite appearing in this strange outfit.

Shin Min Ah accepts her Female Talent Style Icon award.  I think most people prefer to see her as the beautiful "gumiho" in the white dress than wearing this kind of mature-looking gown, but she still has a radiant beauty.

Even though she didn't win any awards, Lee Yoon Ji really looks like a style icon!

Lee Young Eun shows off her S-line in this gorgeous red dress, perfect for a starlet... but she looks a little uncomfortable without a clutch!

Joo Jin Mo smirking his way through the red carpet event, but boy does he look dashing!

One of our biggest winner of the night, lets have a drum roll for TOP! That guy can sure pull off many hairstyles! Love it!

Jeon Hye Bin shows up with Kim Min Joon in a dressy silk champagne gown, while Kim finally makes an appearance since his role in "Friend, an Untold Story"! Looking like a cute couple to us!

2007's Miss Korea, Lee Ji Sun, sparkles with a black dress and her fur on her arms!

Park Soo Jin shows up in black and white.  We like the dress better from the back than the front.  Check it out:

The grand place where the awards were held...

... and the beloved fans gathering at the ceremony!
